Tennessee Golf Almanac and Record Book Now Available

Franklin, Tenn. - Author Gene Pearce of Jackson, Tenn. has written another Tennessee golf history book that details records pertaining to all State tournaments, Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame inductees, award winners, association presidents and more.

The 2006 Tennessee Golf Almanac and Record Book is a 160-page, soft cover book packed with information relating to everything golf in the Volunteer State. If you and a golf buddy have ever argued over who won what tournament and what he/she scored, now you have an easy way to settle the argument.

The book begins with “Milestones in Tennessee Golf,” to give the reader a brief outline of the history of the great sport in Tennessee and from there recounts the professional and amateur championships for men, women and juniors. Each championship has its own chapter that begins with an account of the current championship and winner (2005) including complete leader board results. The past champions and sites, multiple winners and tournament records for each of the championships is also listed.

Pearce’s first venture as an author was “The History of Tennessee Golf: 1894-2001” which was an impressive 494-page hardcover book featuring stories about numerous individuals and events that shaped the game of golf in Tennessee. Other literary efforts include: Southern Golf Association: The First Hundred Years; Field of Dreamers: Celebrating Tennessee High School Sports; and Boys in Black: Basketball’s Greatest David and Goliath Story.

“Gene’s attention to detail and determination to preserve the history of Tennessee golf has been truly amazing,” said Dick Horton, executive director of both the Tennessee Golf Association and Tennessee Section PGA for the past 35 years. “His commitment to this project is greatly appreciated by all golf aficionados.”

The 2006 Tennessee Golf Almanac and Record Book is the quintessential reference book that all Tennessee golfers, golf shops, and libraries should have on hand.

To order for only $20.00 each, plus $2.00 per book for shipping contact Mr. Pearce at rgpsr@aeneas.net or by phone at 731.422.4318.

Hodge Falls in Round 3 of U.S. Amateur

CHASKA, Minn. – Jonathan Hodge, the first University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer to play in the U.S. Amateur, was eliminated in his third round match by British phenom Oliver Fisher.

After bogeying the opening hole, Hodge trailed for the first time in the championship. An Oliver birdie at the second left Hodge 2 down and having to make up ground against one of the finest young players in the world.

Hodge played the next three holes bogey-birdie-bogey and found himself 3 down after five holes. An Oliver birdie at the eighth made the margin four and left Hodge with no room for error. Hodge managed a birdie at the 11th hole, a 606 yard, par-5, but Oliver birdied also to have the hole. That came in a stretch of five consecutive holes which were halved by the duo, leaving Hodge dormie with five to play. Hodge had no choice but to try to birdie the remaining five holes to force extra holes. An aggressive play on 14 left Hodge with bogey and a 5 and 4 loss.

“I am so proud of what Jonathan has accomplished this week” said UTC coach Mark Guhne. “The confidence that a player gets from playing well against an elite field can pay dividends for months, if not longer. I know that this spring when we are at the Southern Conference championships or later at the NCAA regionals that Jonathan can draw from this experience.”

Oliver, they youngest player to ever play in the Walker Cup, was runner-up at this year’s English Amateur.

Hodge may have been the first UTC golfer to play in the U. S. Amateur, but he is not the first to reach the final 16 of a national amateur championship. Teammate Ben Rickett made the final 16 in the English Amateur last month.

UTC opens its golf season by hosting the Scenic City Invitational at The Honors Course September 14-15.

Burris-Lloyd Win CDGA Four-Ball Title

It was going to take a great golf to defeat two-time defending champion Tyson Elliott and Chris Gilliland in the finals of the CDGA Four-Ball championship at Black Creek on Friday.

And great golf is exactly what David Burris and George Lloyd laid on Elliott and Gilliland in the match that was postponed from last Sunday, when a storm drenched the course. Using home course knowlege to its fullest advantage, the Black Creek members were 10 under par through 13 holes, making birdies on all but No. 7 and No. 11, both par threes, and the par-4 12th hole.

The birdie barrage was evenly distributed. Burris made birdies on #1, #4, #5, #6, #8 and #13. Lloyd birdied #2, #3, #5, #9, #10 and #13.

Hodge Still Rolling at U.S. Amateur

CHASKA, Minn.—Chattanooga sophomore Jonathan Hodge never trailed, advancing to the third round of the U.S. Amateur with a 3 and 2 win over John Hahn at Hazeltine National Golf Club on Thursday.

Hahn’s bogey on the second hole gave Hodge an early lead which he increased to 2 up with a birdie on the par 5 third. Back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th pushed Hodge’s lead to 4 up with seven holes remaining. Hahn trimmed the lead to 3 up with a birdie at 14 before Hodge closed out the match with consecutive pars on 15 and 16.

Hodge, who was 1-under par for the day, has not trailed in either of his matches. In fact, he has led after 26 of the 29 holes he has played in those matches.

Numerous rain delays prevented the third round from being played Thursday afternoon. Instead Hodge will face British Walker Cupper and ninth seeded Oliver Fisher at 8:10 (CDT) tomorrow morning. The winner will play again at 1:10 p.m., where top seed Billy Horschel potentially awaits.

Hodge Wins First Match In U.S. Amateur

CHASKA, Minn.—Jonathan Hodge won the opening hole of his match and never trailed, defeating LSU’s Beck Troutman 6 and 5 in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur.

The Tennessee-Chattanooga sophomore went 3-up after birdies on five, seven and eight. A bogey by Troutman on the ninth hole gave Hodge a 4-up lead at the turn. Hodge won the 11th and 12th holes with pars and closed out the match 6 and 5 with a par on the 13th.

Hodge, who is seeded number 56 in the 64 player field, will face no. 41 John Hahn Thursday morning at 7:30 (CDT). The winner will advance to the round of 16 and play again at 1:10 p.m.

Wednesday was a good day for the higher seeds who won 23 of the 32 matches, but the highest seeds struggled with four of the top nine seeds being upset. Hodge’s win over the ninth seeded Beckman was the first upset of the day and was the second largest margin of victory on the day.

The Golf Channel will have two hours of highlights from tomorrow’s matches from 4-6 p.m. (EDT).

After Thursday’s matches the field will be narrowed to eight players, with single matches on Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s final will be 36 holes.

UTC's Hodge Advances to Match Play at U.S. Amateur

Chaska, Minn. -- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Jonathan Hodge survived an 11-player playoff to advance to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur.

Hodge followed Monday’s 73 at the Chaska Town Course with a 74 at the difficult Hazeltine National Golf Club and is 4-over par after completion of stroke play. Hodge ended stroke play as one of 11 players tied for 55th place at 4-over, meaning one needed to be eliminated to trim the field to the 64 competitors needed for match play. Hodge and three others made par on Hazeltine’s 410 yard, 10th hole to advance to match play.

Hodge, who is the first golfer in UTC history to play in the U.S. Amateur, will face LSU’s Beck Troutman in a match teeing off at 8:20 (CDT). Beck is the fifth seed after a 1-under par performance in stroke play.

“Jonathan has taken his game to another level this summer” said Mocs’ coach Mark Guhne. “He got off to a great start as low amateur at the True Temper in Memphis, and has stayed at that high level. It’s gotten to the point where nothing he does surprises me any more.”

The United States Golf Association received 7,182 entries for this year’s U.S. Amateur. Sectional qualifying was conducted over 36 holes at 98 sites to narrow the field to the 312 players who participated in stroke play over the last two days at Hazeltine National Golf Club and the Chaska Town Course. Now that the field has been cut to 64 players, the remaining players will be seeded and match play will begin Wednesday with one round of 18-hole matches, followed by two rounds on Thursday and single rounds on Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s final round will be a 36-hole match.

The Golf Channel will have two hours of coverage Wednesday-Friday from 4-6 p.m. (EDT). NBC will carry two hours on Saturday and Sunday, also from 4-6 p.m. (EDT).

Gilliland Leads Don Malarkey Open

The collegians were at it again on Monday.

The leaderboards in Tennessee and Chattanooga-area golf tournaments have been increasingly inhabited by college players, the last few years, and the first round of the Don Malarkey Open at Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club was no different. Furman junior Chris Gilliland, son of Council Fire director of golf Hunt Gilliland, shot a 7-under-par 64 to take a two-shot lead over pro Eric Rebman of Knoxville.

Right behind Rebman was Nick Blakely, who's signed to play at Birmingham Southern. He shot 67. Both Gilliland and Blakley made the cut at last week's Tennessee Amateur at Black Creek.

In the Senior Division, amateur Barry Klinikowski of Lebanon, Tenn. shot a 66 and leads by two shots over pros Mark Houser of Kingsport and James Paschal of Hendersonville.

UTC’s Hodge Earns Spot in U.S. Amateur

UTC sophomore Jonathan Hodge qualified for the U.S. Amateur on Tuesday, shooting rounds of 67-71 at Willow Creek in Knoxville. The day before, teammate Bryce Ledford nabbed first alternate in a U.S. Amateur qualifier at Muskegon (Mich.) Country Club after rounds of 73-70.

The amateur will be played Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. on Aug. 21-27. Hazeltine has a rich USGA history, having played host to the U.S. Open in 1970 and 1991. Ledford starts play in the Western Amateur Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, teammate Ben Rickett is making some noise across the pond. On Tuesday, he advanced to the round of 32 in the English Amateur at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club with a 3 and 2 victory over Will Roebuck.

“Who would have ever thought UTC would have players in the U.S. Amateur, the Western Amateur and the English Amateur at the same time?” Moc coach Mark Guhne said. “We’ve put an emphasis on our guys playing in important tournaments, and I think we’ve had a great summer.”
